The First & Final Y3K Second (third) Inaugural Melbourne Biennial of International Arts

The Y3K Biennial is a curatorial project developed by Joshua Petherick, James Deutsher, and Christopher L G Hill that features the work of 6 artists from Australia, and 6 artists from elsewhere. It serves as a continuation of both the first, and only, Melbourne Biennial ‘Signs of Life’ (1999), and the second, Y2K artist initiated Biennial (2008), also held in Melbourne. The Y3K Biennial looks at the extension of events and spaces in a lateral and literal sense address the importance of exchange between the Melbourne and Australian contemporary art context with that of our International peers in an open non-formal way, based on the quality of the work and artists participating. With Y3K’s anterior Biennial (the Y2K artist initiated Biennial (2008)) having served as the non-official inaugural Y3K exhibit, the new Y3K Biennial (“title”) will take it’s place as the final exhibition of Y3K’s Melbourne gallery space (2009-2011), positioning the two Biennials as symbolic bookends to the Y3K project.

Over the last 24 months we have worked with over 99 artists designers and curators to make 48 presentations in Australia and overseas.

Y3K is/was a two-year proposition initiated James Deutsher and Christopher L G Hill, a gallery practice as-an-extension-of an art practice and-in-support-of a wider art and design community in Melbourne and Internationally. SALVATION IN A NEST OF VIPERS: LOSTprojects Manila in Y3K

Salvation in a nest of vipers is about the other side of Manila completely opposed to the photorealist trend, and rising above the picturesque. The artists making up the group exhibition are inclined towards the glut of the city, opening up a space where imagination takes a toll from the substance it springs from. It is in this space where the painters exhaust imagery in a primal and sophisticated visual language, and conjures parallel tableaux of blatant debauchery not very far from actual parades of perversions. Photography in Salvation in a nest of vipers meanwhile are straight shots of underworlds and underbellies, marking a horizon line of recoil and attraction.

About LOSTprojects

LOSTprojects is an alternative art space situated in Industrial Vallery Marikina, off track from cultural strips and commercial districts in Metro Manila. LOSTprojects is dedicated to building a more engaged community of artists, curators and alternative art spaces. It is an expanded platform of exchange primarily among artists in Manila and Australia. Likewise it exists to promote artists, who are involved in its projects, within and beyond these two regions.

Founded by Australian artist David Griggs, who has been based in Manila since early 2009, LOSTprojects was officially established through its successful participation in VOLTA6 (Basel, Switzerland) in June 2010. It was inaugurated on 1 July 2010 with its first resident artist, Pow Martinez. Since then, it has held exhibitions by Martinez, Ben Quilty and recently, Sam Kiyoumarsi.

LOSTprojects is run by David Griggs and independent curator/ art writer Siddharta Perez.

About the artists

David Griggs (b. 1975)

David Griggs was born in Sydney, 1975. He currently lives and works in Manila, Philippines. Griggs known best for his paintings, photography and installation projects works closely with various communities and artists. Creating highly active political humorous projects that have dealt with the incarceration of inmates from Manila City Jail to Halloween festivals with street kids in Santa Mesa.

Griggs’ works have been exhibited in major solo and group exhibitions through-out Australia, South East Asia and Europe. Selected exhibitions include “Exchanging Culture for Flesh” (2006) at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, “Zombie Kiss” (2009) in Uplands Gallery, Melbourne, “Bastards of Misrepresentation: Doing Time on Filipino Time” (2010) in Freies Museum, Berlin and “Inversion of the Ideal” (2010) in Galerie Zimmerman-Kratochwill, Graz, Austria. He was part of the Primavera 2006 in the Museum of Contempoary Art in Sydney and “Fluid Zones”, the 2009 Jakarta Biennale.

Sam Kiyoumarsi (b.1980)

Sam Kiyoumarsi is a photographer mainly influenced by contemprorary practices in sound and visual expression. He started out as an underground musician and later on developed his interest in films, still imagery, paintings, and the visual arts.

Kiyoumarsi was represented by LOSTprojects in Volta6 Basel, Switzerland in 2010 and was featured in the group show “Absolute Winter” in Charlotte Fogh Contemporary, Denmark. He has participated in exhibitions in galleries and alternative art spaces in Manila since 2006 and recently had his solo exhibitions “A History of Bad Ideals” in Mo_space and “Inalienable Dreamless” in LOSTprojects. Kiyoumarsi runs Light and Space, an independent art space in Fairview, Metro Manila, with Pow Martinez.

Robert Langenegger (b. 1983)

Robert Langenegger studied Fine Arts in Kalayaan College and University of the Philippines. He has had six solo exhibition since 2006. His works have been featured in Freies Museum Berlin, MOP Projects Sydney, VOLTA6 in Basel and Goliath Visual Space in Brooklyn. His exhibition “Irish Bull of the mother and child” was shortlisted in the 2008 Ateneo Art Awards. He was also a Finalist in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in the same year.

Langenegger's works are described to be “phantasmagoric carnivals of hallucinogenic, carnal carnage.” Gritty imagery are juxtaposed with cool, vapid scenery. The themes in oeuvre run from the “psychadelia of current events and world politics [to] art history, colonial reverberations and religion.”

Pow Martinez (b. 1983)

Pow Martinez studied Fine Arts at Kalayaan College and at the University of the Philippines. He has been involved in the local sound art scene aside from his four solo exhibitions in Manila. His works has been featured in exhibitions in Richard Koh Fine Art, Future Prospects, mo_space, Silverlens Lab and Freies Museum, Berlin. His exhibition in West Gallery in 2009 earned him the 2010 Ateneo Art Awards. He is also the first artist to be bestowed the studio grant in LOSTprojects. Martinez runs Light and Space, an independent art space in Fairview, Metro Manila.

Martinez creates multi-media sound installations as well as expressionistic paintings. He often paints figures in a fetishistically naïve style exploring the terrain of man’s inhumanity to man and primitive mythologies in a hard-hitting and overtly humorous way. His music and sound installations reflect the same obsession with the outrageous as his music comes from the tradition of the avant-garde.

MM Yu (b. 1978)

MM Yu received her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Painting, from the University of the Philippines in 2001. The 13 Artists Awards was bestowed unto her in 2009 and the Ateneo Art Award and Common Room Bandung Residency Grant in 2007. She has held solo exhibitions in Metro Manila and her works have been featured in group and survey exhibitions such as “Bastards of Misrepresentation” (2010) in Freies Museum Berlin, “Inversion of the Ideal” (2010) in Galeria Zimmerman-Kratochwill in Graz, Austria, “This and That” (2009) in Triple Base, San Francisco as well as in the travelling exhibitions “CUT09: New Photography from Southeast Asia” (2009) and “Beyond Frame: Philippine Photomedia” (2008)

Yu's photography-based works embark on an experiment where the photograph embodies both the intentional and accidental, the found and the perceived.

SANAA/Clay Feet the color of Bacon Bits

今回のSANAA/Clay Feet the color of Bacon Bits’展は、僕にとって初めての東京の個展です。東京を訪れるのはこれで５度目ですが、今回この貴重な機会をいただけてうれしく思っています。本展を開催するにあたり、様々なこと――贅沢にかんすること、たびかさなる失敗、理想と現実のギャップ――からヒントをもらい、自分の直感に従って作品を制作しました。

Clay Feet について

まず、イザベル・グロウの言葉”The values of art rests on clay feet.” を出発点としました。文字どおり受け取ると、「アートの価値の基盤は粘土の足である」というふうに読めますが、「アートの価値の基盤はもろいものだ」という意味です。（clay feet ＝「粘土の足」「もろい基盤」）僕は、その両方の意味で彼女の言葉を参考にすることにしました。

万国共通、明確な「醜い足」の代表として、僕は自分の足(feet)をモデルにして、粘土(clay)で彫刻を作り始めました。しかし、作り始めてすぐにこれは失敗だったと気が付きました。自分の作っているものが、ただの醜い彫刻にしか思えなかったのです。自分ひとりでは、満足のいく彫刻が作れませんでした。それでも、人間の醜い足を作ることは諦められず、プロの職人に依頼し、ガラス繊維で本物そっくりの僕の足を作ってもらうことにしました。そのために、まず足の写真を何枚も撮りました。（靴をはいた状態、ぬいだ状態。靴下をはいた状態、ぬいだ状態。長ズボンの裾が写っている状態、写っていない状態。裸足の状態など）次に、粘土の足(clay feet)を作り、それを型にして、ガラス繊維を成型しました。それから、写真の足に合わせ、スプレーで色付けをしました。

ある日、制作スタジオの前で、ガラス繊維の型に使った粘土の足(clay feet)が、ぬかるんだ泥のなかに捨ててあるのを見つけました。半分壊れかけ、変形し、ごみのように扱われているこの粘土のかたまりは、もともと僕の足をモデルに作ったんだと主張するべく僕はそのぬかるみに足を踏み入れました。その瞬間、僕は自分が哀しい英雄になったような気がしました。純粋な贅沢感と空虚感におそわれました。それは、そのとき履いていたマルジェラの靴が、ベーコンビッツ（サラダなどにかける乾燥したベーコンのふりかけ）の色に染まってしまったからです。僕は、粘土の足型を探そうと泥に足を入れて、メゾンマルタンマルジェラのスニーカーを台無しにしてしまったのです。

上記のNicki Minaj (ニッキー・ミナージュ)の歌詞は、想像するとぞっとしますが、同時にとてつもなく贅沢です。ラガーフェルドの「本物の贅沢とは、雨のなかで毛皮を着ることだ」という言葉のように。Minajの過激なラップ歌詞では、究極の贅沢とは、ひどい色（ベーコンビッツのような色）のメルセデスベンツの最新モデルを買い、それを自慢することだと言っています。そうすることで流行のスタイルを超えるのです。誰かがこんなことも言っていました。「本物の贅沢というのは、それがどんなにひどい代物か気付かずにいることだ」と。

SANAAについて

Clay Feet のそばにある２つの彫刻作品は、東京にあるSANAAの森山邸に訪れたいと思ったことがきっかけでうまれました。森山邸は、2005年以降、世界でもっとも多く注目されている住居建造物のひとつです。本展の彫刻は、現代的な住居におけるプライバシー、アート作品としての構造、解釈とその価値にかんする考察です。森山邸の写真や文章を見て、理想のイメージを抱き、実際に建物を観るまでに、心境にどういう変化が起きるのかということに注目をしました。建築において「空間を体験する」ことは、最重要なのです。

建築の世界では、写真資料が出回ってしまうため、実際に空間を経験することもなく、素材の質や朝5時の光の射しこみ方も知らないまま、その建物について理解した気になっている人がたくさんいます。これは大変損なことで問題だと思います。しかし、現代的な建築が注目を浴びるのは、写真が出回るからであり、またそれでさらに人々の注目をあつめ……出口のない悪循環です。

僕は、専門家や一般の人々がSANAAの建築や森山邸に対してどう考えているのか調べるために、関連画像や文章を検索しました。人々が抱いているイメージはどんなものか、そのイメージは実際の建築経験にどう影響を及ぼしているのか。そのプロセスのなかで心境にどんな変化が訪れるのだろうか、と考えていました。そして、調べているうちに僕は自分なりの解釈を持ちはじめました。

そして、先週、いよいよ実際に森山邸へ向かいました。よく晴れた気持ちのいい日でした。森山邸のある通りまで来ましたが、カメラをいじりながら歩いていたので、転びそうになりました。その時、ふと庭に停められたスクーターバイクや、妙に目立つステンレスのレターボックスが視界に入りました。顔をあげると、ある窓の向こうにキッチンに立つTシャツを着た30代くらいの男の人が見えました。その窓の前を歩いて通りすぎようとしたとき、その男の人はちらりと目が合いました。お互いに恥ずかしそうな顔をしていたと思います。僕はそのまま立ち止まらず歩き去りました。何が起きたのか頭の中で整理できないほど一瞬でしたが、ロマンチックな瞬間でした。でも、そのせいで僕はほんの20秒間しか森山邸の前にいませんでした。しかし、その20秒ほどの間に森山邸に漂う生活感を垣間見ました。

あらかじめ抱いていたスタイリッシュなイメージとは裏腹に森山邸から滲み出る生活感を見て、僕は少なからずショックを受けました。理想と現実のギャップを実感しました。こうして僕の森山邸訪問は、ロマンチックでありながらも、ある意味、20秒の間にショックを受けたきまりわるい失敗に終わりました。

Critique or Gesture: Is that the alternative?

森山邸のような家に暮らすとはどういうことなのでしょう？つまり、現代建築文化として価値が高く、世界が注目するクールな建物に暮らすとはどういうことなのでしょうか。プライベートでありながらパブリックでもある場所で、日常生活や家族のだらしない部分を他人に目撃されうる生活にちがいありません。
森山邸の生活感のなかでもっとも印象的だったのは、庭のホースでした。ホースはただの物体であると同時に、日用品の代表でした。そこで人が生活しているということをはっきり主張していました。僕が見つけた資料の中で、もっとも実際の森山邸を伝えているのは、一般の人々が投稿した森山邸の動画でした。概して映像のクオリティは低いものが多いですが、僕の見た森山邸の現実に近い姿が捉えられています。正式な撮影用に整えられたきれいな状態とは程遠く、手入れされていない庭の草、無造作に置かれたホース、サンルームに干されている洗濯物、キッチンで皿を洗う住人などが映っているのが見えます。森山邸は構造的にも素材的にも透けて見えるので、こうした人々の生活がパブリックに開放されてしまいます。
今回の彫刻作品は、こうした経験に基づく、image（イメージ）、representation（写真や文章などの資料）、experience（実際に森山邸に行ったこと）にかんする批評の終着点です。Issey Miyake と Comme des Garçon BLACKのショッピングバッグに流し込まれたコンクリートの彫刻作品には、個人的なリサーチと集合住宅における僕なりのロジックが込められているのです。

ジャケットについて
2枚のジャケットを展示しています。どちらもComme des Garçonのブレザージャケットのパターンです。1枚は、映画「マイアミ・バイス」（監督：マイケル・マン、日本公開2006年）の有名なボートのシーンで、コン・リーが着ていた黒いウールのパワースーツを参考にしました。そして、そのファブリックには森山邸の画像をプリントしました。あまり写りのよくない画像ですが、あとでパターンメーカーがさらに手を加え、パネルをつくります。ちょうど、イザベラがソニーと夜をともにしたあとに、”This is past a bad idea” （こんなの、バッドアイディアの域を超えているわ）と言いましたが、そういうことなのです。もしくは、ベーコンビッツ色したメルセデスベンツと同じくらい醜いはずです。もう1枚のComme des Garçonパターンの白いジャケットの素材は、安価なコットンドリルです。本展が始まるまで、僕はスタジオの中でも、東京で外に出るときも、ずっとこの白いジャケットを着て生活しました。白を纏って生活する、つまりSANAAの建物で暮らすイメージです。

If the success of a model depends on it's resemblance to a source then how much less than the thing itself does a model have to be? If a model is always something like it's source isn't it always also something more, namely a model? The argument, I suppose, is that a model is more in total than anything it could represent: it has to be both an abstraction of another thing (1/2) and it's own thing in it's own right (1). That's the math. A model of a thing is 1 1/2 times more of a thing than the whole original thing. I'd like to show you all this new 3/4 scale model of October 12 that I made.

Flowers of Romance.

Reading thru the text Simon gave me to accompany my show flowers of romance I thought it could be worth writing about the project and some other things that overlap and compliment it. The start and end of Simon’s writing some up an emotion of love that is both devastating, grounding and mesmerically blissful, a feeling in kin to sun kissed tears and the metallicness of auto tuned popular song, this is somewhat out of context with his overall text, but that is also in keeping with a momentary elusiveness that I hoped to evoke in the project. The vessel like a metaphysial hart, like the moment of romance in flowers. Emotion or poetry, something always imbedded in an object or person but not always at the surface. The album cover of Public Image Limited’s Flowers of romance has always seduced and perplexed me in this way, its gesture of anger and love, but a poetic play anger. It is a puppy love, a finding out the perimeters of emotions for the first time, a coming of age, not of years, but not of a relation or situation. A filtration or setting, kind of, a bit like a germinating yeast culture. Simon’s text has this momentary nature of a nostalgia and of it’s place in a current moment of un said things of contained spaces within mp3 or memory. Flowers have this, in the case of on growing geraniums and Liv and Joshua’s arrangement for the opening of the show. They both talk differently about this moment of poetic gesture, of growth and reflection, of symbology and formalism co-currently. The on growing flowers are still just a gesture of on going dialog or development of ideas and governing structure, the opening arrangement of a joyous moment filtered through the fleeting pleasure of a screen grab. The bottles are this too, a bunch of moments a folder of jpegs interacting with each other like a blog post, and like an internet based moment they seem at least to me like a mist, contained within certain perimeters indeed, but still transcendent, all hanging at the same hight close to the floor, like a long meandering internal dialog printed and with the individual words highlighted or something else. The relations of the bottles are varied, and form dialogs un spoken or un graspable, almost mystically abstract in a non formal sense. Their discardedness a testament to the importance of through away ideas, of belief and faith in oneself and those around her. Of romance and its power momentary on the individual or among their surrounding close ones. Of a recycling of the continual moment, reinterpreting ideas about political structures and personal possibilities within a poetic political dialectic. Thus the inclusion of a themed group show showing this as an extension of practise and an inclusion of others or the moment of engagement with others. The works by Helen, Nick, James, Joshua, and Virginia are an extension of the theme of growth, romance and love. All people who are very close to me in different ways, the frames and subject matter of flowers as a curatorial frame work for them to adhere too as an acceptance of the perimeters of friendship and collaboration, there is a push and pull with these and the highly contained aesthetic of the work made me have these works as a kind of aside to the rest of the show. Although they function with other trains of though and currents that run through the space. The colour of the window frames being a very literal form of this, the taking of a very simular colour to that which Kate Newby used to paint the ledge in her show at Y3K which I then chose to use on the frames in my show. The mirrors also talk of this not being just one body of work or one show (in that it captures the show many times again) of overlap, of repeated gestures and their subtle differences. Of evolution in a rhizomic non linear form, the geraniums symbolise this growth through love, care, or romance in a very straight forward way. But the combination of elements creates this balance, where the un noticed is rewarding too. Politics always interest me more when they have layers of the people involved in them, of misunderstanding or ideas not yet fully formed. This moment of clumsy realisation, of romance is what my praxis in the context of this show was aiming for. Of apprehension and freedom, of a conscious but selfless gesture of opening up to a crush.

Exploring independent arts cultures from across Australia and Asia, Structural Integrity includes the work of six Australian and five Asian Galleries. The exhibition will be open every day of the Festival, and is Next Wave’s biggest and most ambitious engagement with the Asia-Pacific region in the Festival’s 25-year history.

Working on-site at the Meat Market in the month leading up to the Festival, each artist group will create a large-scale structure, or ‘pavilion’, inside this vast historical building.

To celebrate Tate Modern’s 10th anniversary, the gallery will host No Soul For Sale – A Festival of Independents. The festival will bring together over 70 of the world’s most exciting independent art spaces, non-profit organizations and artists’ collectives, from Shanghai to Rio de Janeiro, to take over the iconic Turbine Hall with an eclectic mix of cutting-edge arts events, performances, music and film on 14-16 May 2010.   Ranging from monumental structures to witty interventions, epic performances to interactive installations, participants will exhibit alongside each other without partitions or walls, creating a pop-up village of global art for visitors to explore. All participants will host a live event of their choice on the dedicated performance space on the Turbine Hall bridge, ranging from talks and screenings to performances (schedule will be announced soon).

Christopher L G Hill will talk about Y3K, and perform vocal abstractions as Moffarfarrah between 1-1:30 on Saturday 15th ON the stage area of the Turbine Hall.

Speech and What Archive? Melbourne Flottante
Speech and What Archive? began on a floating house on a river in Chatou at the invitation of A Constructed World.
In Melbourne Flottante, we continue to consider what is kept and why it is kept, how things may be mapped, traced or stored, the possible shape and content of an archive, who may speak and what is kept unsaid, and generally what is privileged in culture so that it is available to the future.
The exhibition is composed of a presentation element, where objects that in some way act as archives will be exhibited at Y3K, and archive development, where the curators will work on methodologies of archiving and re-presentation for the duration of the show.

Speech and What Archive? Melbourne Flottante is curated by Marie Gaultier and Anna Hess (Paris) and Liv Barrett and James Deutsher (Melbourne) with the support and counsel of A Constructed World.

Speech and What Archive is a project of A Constructed World. This project was made possible with funding and support from Vision Forum and Linköping University; CNEAI, Chatou; Social Practice MFA Program, CCA, San Francisco; and Villa Arson, Nice.

As a work of civic collection, at a time when our future is being destroyed, ACW and the curators of Melbourne Flottante would like to invite you to participate in a Speaking Event in the Melbourne room.
You are invited to present any avowal around this subject of Speech and What Archive - what-can-we-say, what-will-we-keep in a short text, speech, performance, song, action or reading of up to 5 minutes.
Your presentation does not necessarily have to address contemporary art, it can be about the environment, garbage, media, politics, whatever-you-want. At a time when artists pay-to-say-what-they-want we offer this free platform.
Documentation of the event will be shown during a similar public event, Explaining contemporary art to live eels #6, for the closing of the exhibition Double Bind at Villa Arson, 29 and 30 May . On the last day of this weekend ACW's eels will be the released back into the Pallion river in Nice.
Some people including Veronica Kent and Sean Peoples, Lizzy Newman Jon Campbell, Jarrod Rawlins, Keith Al-Hasani, Ruby Lowe and Justin Clemens have already confirmed their participation but feel free to come and speak as well.
